More chairs and other finds.

What is it with me and chairs at the moment? Even though I  recently bought this chair, I couldn't help myself when I saw this one...

One armed (how it is designed), very funky hey! I think I will re-varnish the arm and legs. The fabric is in good condition but needs a clean, there are a couple of fluffy areas of fabric that I will have to do something with but overall it's great. If I can't find a spot for this chair, I may have to sell it (but that would be a shame). Oh yeah, I nearly forgot to say that it is REALLY comfy!

I also recently bought  two wooden folding chairs, not sure if I will keep them as is or paint them. $5 each! The old lady I got them from was holding up her garage sale shelving with them. I asked if they were for sale and she said if I came back Monday I could pick them up. When I got there Monday she couldn't remember me...hmm, not good but luckily her memory clicked back in and she said yes, she had put them aside for me. :)

I picked us these yellow and white folding chairs in hope that one day I will be able to get the old caravan out of Dads shed. I have some fond memories of that caravan from when I was a kid and would love to give it a new life and new memories. These chairs  would be cute with it I think! $3 each!

This dish below is from an op shop near my work. I sometimes go for a walk at lunch and as turns out I can walk to this oppie and back within half an hour. Nice!

I love Depression glass (not sure if this is Depression or not as I have not seen this pattern before- will have to do some Googling). I used pink glass for Little Miss' birthday party. I actually had some pieces that I forgot to bring out so maybe will have to do the same this year so they get some use. I love green Depression glass also but as it is so popular it is difficult to find (therefore my collection is mostly pink).

I got a kitchen magazine for $1 and also picked up this little cutie for the same amount. I am a sucker for mixing bowls.

Not so Depressing Depression Glass and a 50s find.

I ended up back at Murray Bridge last Friday as when I was there Tuesday I noticed that my  favourite antique shop in the area had a big closing down sign and of course it wasn't open right then. I ended buying this pink Depression glass cake plate (small chip) for $15 (was marked $22). Of course way more than I would normally pay, but I have a thing for the pink plates since I used them for my daughters first party.  Very Nana and something that I would have looked past 5 years ago. It's so prrretty. I am hoping that it is not a reproduction as it seems a little too perfect. Even if it is I still love it.

I recently found this pretty pink plate in our shed, yes sometimes I forget what I have in there. I didn't use it for the party because I thought I had sold it, and even thought I had sold it for $15 - lol, shows how good my memory is. It's a bit frilly for my liking, but I think it's a keeper. It was found at the oppie at my work. The old duck who works there is up with prices of things (she has a pc in the oppie and I am pretty sure she is scanning eBay).  I once over heard the other ladies who work there having a granny bitch session about her and her crazy marked up prices. Hee Hee. She is a bit of a hard arse (sorry couldn't thing of a better term). I tend not to go there because I get frustrated, but this was marked $5 and I must admit I felt a bit triumphant (one for me, zero for crazy price granny). 

I have been wanting a green square butter lidded dish for a while but only at a cheap price. I think this is a bread one (bigger rectangle size). I picked it up at a GS while on holiday. It was marked $20 but I got it for $15. Again is a bit much but they tend to go for $40 or more on eBay. If it wasn't something I wanted I would never pay that much. Needs a bit of a clean but can you see the imperfections in the lid. See all the swirls It's what I really love about Depression Glass.

These salad servers were 50cents each set. There were groovy red ones also but had too much damage from use. I love these colours. Funky don't you think?

Another Murray Bridge find was this 50's atomic cake plate for $2. Does anyone know if these types of things are worth buying for resale? Not that I am doing any of that at the moment. I saw a few other 50s numbers. Light glass, cheap I guess. Probably one of those things that you need to stock away for 10 years time when they will be worth more. Mr M and I watch too much Collectors on ABC and get itchy to start hoarding potential future money makers. Lol. So far we have resisted.

One for the Garage 'Sailors'

Last night Mr M and I watched the movie 'Second-Hand Wedding' and had quite a few chuckles. I thought I would share with you as I really enjoyed it. It is about a garage sale obsessed mother and her not so keen on the idea daughter. It had been my pick from the DVD shop and hubby said that it must have just jumped off the shelf into my hands because it was me all over. I have not seen this one advertised before - probably because it is a bit of a B-grade beauty. I could totally relate to the excitement of finding a bargain and couldn't help but smile most of the way through. It's a New Zealand flick and I loved that it was so down to earth. I think anyone who enjoys going to garage sales (or 'sailing' as Mr M and I call it) would love it. I especially enjoyed a scene where the main character asked her husband to guess how much she had bought something for. Reminded me so much of my Grandfather and Dad (and me also). :) Why does no one seem to like that game? Hee hee. After a hard day at work where I had come home brain dead it was nice to not have to think too much and just relax and have a giggle.

Master M had a whole day of  Pre-school for the first time on Tuesday last week. He had a fantastic time which was wonderful and I was so relieved. While he was there I decided that I would make another trip to Murray Bridge as I had left a Pyrex casserole dish at a junk shop that I couldn't stop thinking about. Alas it was gone but these bowls were still there. I thought about it for a long while and decided that they would just have to come home with me. Little Miss was getting grumpy and over it, so that helped the decision along.

To be honest I am still coming to terms with using second mixing bowls and other crockery/glass ware. I think after I have used them a few times I will get over it (and after they have had a bath in some disinfectant). Like my SIL says 'you use other peoples cutlery and crockery in a resturant so what is the difference'. This is coming from a true germophobe.

I picked up this blue Depression glass plate for $1 at a Red Cross oppie. Not sure what I am going to do with it but I am a sucker for coloured Depression glass (unless it is amber, then I only really like frosted).

'Twas slim picking in Murray Bridge I must say. I bought a vintage doll/teddy bear clothes knitting pattern and a funky vintage apron and that was it.

Has been beautiful weather in Adelaide, South Australia this week, but has rained all day today. We even got a 25 degree day on Wednesday, in this the last month of winter!!! I can't complain. However the latest regarding our extension is that the bricklayer came by today and told us that it is too wet to lay our bricks right now and he might have to wait until SUMMER!!! Yes...SUMMER!! That is still a few months away. Ahhh! Were were hoping it would be done for Christmas.

Oh well, I guess we have waited this long, we can wait a bit longer. At least the kids will still have somewhere to ride their bikes!

Cool stuff in Strath!

On Saturday Mr M thought that it was a good day to go for a drive to Strathalbyn. It is about 25 minutes from us and has LOTS of antique and collectible shops. Every August the town holds 'Strathalbyn Collectors, Hobbies and Antiques Fair'. This year Tim Wonnacott  from Bargain Hunt is making an appearance. I have been seeing his mug on the back of  public transport lately. You know the guy who matches his glasses to his bow tie, seems to really like pink and has teeth only a mother could love? Might even try and go this year as we have never been before. Anyway,  there is one shop in Strath that I LOVE, there is soooo much to look at. We had a squiz and I took some pics, then walked up High Street to check out some others shops. Mr M ended up waiting outside with the kids because Master M decided it was very boring and we didn't really trust him not to break anything. I didn't spend long in the shops because they were waiting for me but also because when you normally go to garage sales the prices in antiques shops seem way over the top. One place wanted $30 for a Pyrex mixing bowl that wasn't even in the best condition. I just get a bit frustrated with this as I am a bargain hunter.

It's my party and I'll cry if I want to...

Happy first Birthday to my gorgeous little girl!!  I had so much fun organising my first girls party after four boys ones. It was a cup cake theme party with just close family invited (because that was enough stress for me - lol).

At one stage all the children iced and decorated cup cakes that I had made earlier. It all went really well and not as messy as I was expecting. They also played pass the parcel and spent the rest of the day tearing around the back yard.

We had a yucky week though as birthday girl had a high temp that started on Monday. It finally went and she woke temp free on Friday but she still wasn't herself. She also has 4 teeth coming at once. We held the party at my mums as until we get the extension done there is no room here.  When we arrived at Mums she cried and cried so off to bed for her. Luckily everyone was late. Once she woke she had a nice time crawling around the floor looking like a little ballerina in her pettiskirt. When we got home I noticed a rash on her trunk but because she had already been in contact with her cousins we couldn't do much about it. Likely Roseola. Oops, I feel bad but what can you do?

Birthday girl loved her birthday cake -  me not so much. The first attempt wouldn't come out of the tin and crumbled so I resorted to a packet mix and then in haste broke off a part of the bottom of the cup cake but all good in the end about 1/2 an hour before the party. Of course it worked well for my practice attempt.  I was still decorating when guests arrived (late). I found the butterfly and flower icing cutters from eBay for $6 for each set of three (including postage). I saw the same thing in a cake decorating shop locally for $27 (I would like to buy in Australia but it is a bit difficult when there is such a price difference)..

This is what it looked like after she had had a play. It looks small in this pic but was quite large and big enough to take slices from the other side. Not that I had many takers since they had filled up on cup cakes and sweets.

I really enjoyed making all the party food and found out how to make the pom poms from here: tissue Paper pom poms. This was a bit easier to follow than the Martha Stewart instructions.

I was going to make decorated cup cakes myself for the party but an email came through for 24 cupcakes for $25 at a bakery in the city so I couldn't go past that.

As you can see the cup cakes arrived late with the guests (empty cupcake stand in back ground).

Have you noticed that I used pink depression glass mixed in with the modern white. I only just found one of the plates last weekend and paid more than I normally would but knew I could use it for the party. I also used a clear depression glass vase to display the gingerbread on pop sticks.

All up a great day had by all (you should have seen the house I came home to  - what a mess!!).

On Mothers Day we were having an afternoon tea at my SIL's house, so we left home a little early and visited the Port Markets on the way. Not much else to do on a Sunday.

I always ask the owners of stores if it is ok to photograph. Some of them look at me like I am crazy but others seem to understand - lol. Here are some pics for you.

As I have mentioned in the past, I have a thing for these old electric kettles. I really love the blue jug that is third in from the left. It has great curves and the colour is gorgeous. However being a bargain hunter there is no way I could bring myself to pay the $50 it has marked on it. Will have put it on my 'To Find' list.

Pretty Meakin set for four. Did I just say that? Hmm. I am getting old.

A retro budget box. Love this, check out the cute pics. Was marked $38 (too much for me). Wouldn't it be nice if we could pay our electricity bill in coins these days!

These look familiar, and again only four in this set. Maybe I was wrong when I thought I was missing one. I much prefer the blue and white (in other words - mine are sooo much better - lol).

The top part of this Edwardian high chair is adorable but the gears around the legs are a bit creepy and make it look like a piece of equipment that could be used in a torture chamber. It had an eerie feeling to it sitting there by itself. Sometimes antiques give off these kind of vibes don't you think? Times like this  I am glad that I live in this day and age where my best friend at meal times is a white IKEA Antiploe plastic fantastic high chair that I can hose down if need be.

 The gentleman at one stall wanted me to know all about this book. Printed in the 1930's it certainly not up to todays strict standards for our precious children's eyes. Perhaps we are overly cautious these days about what our children read or see on TV but now I can see how have become this way. Umm, Jack hung the Giants with a noose around the neck and illustrations included!! Night terrors anyone? Thank goodness they decided to only show the giants from behind!

Sigh. Can really see why some people love old type writers. So much character...

More canisters. Love the set with the green lids and I am pretty sure my Nana had some similar to the red and cream ones.

Miss Piggy would love this 'Kermit the Frog green' kettle.

Not usually such a fan of amber Depression glass but quite like it frosted. An elegant pair.

Had a great time but it was reaffirmed that children and vintage don't mix - even on Mother's Day!
