Saved the cutest for last.

Hey all! Wasn't feeling the blogging vibe last week but have had a few finds to share from the last two weeks.

The other day I took an unwanted painting from our office to our on site op shop, the volunteer managed to take out some breakables with the back end of it when he did a quick turn. Whoops! Lucky it was just some ugly hand made cherubs, but I did feel sorry for him (he felt terrible).  The painting sold while I was there, I am guessing to a volunteer. I rarely find anything at this oppie but I picked up a brand new Tupperware Happy Chopper for $2, still with some cardboard on the blades!!  I also bought a couple of Pyrex lids for 25c each, a milk glass plate for $1 (which I blame on Zara from Zaranne Handmade as I loved this post  and the pic of the milk glass with the red).  I bought the blue and white sheet in the photo recently but not here.

The week before my sister and I went down south to visit our cousin last Sunday. We popped into Savers on the way (we were excited that it was open on a Sunday).

Again the prices were a bit high but I did buy a couple of things that I looove...

This brilliant green Pyrex is gorgeous don't you think, and the gold is in fantastic condition which you rarely see.

More Pyrex. $2 for the snowflakes and $3 for the mixing bowl. Oh, actually these were from a local Salvos.

I saved the cutest for last!  Found this at Red Cross, I nearly didn't walk there because I was pushing Little Miss's patience (this was the third op shop). It did mean I ended up carrying her back to the car and pushing the pram at the same time but it was worth it.  Love it!

I thought you might be interested seeing some of the things I have sold lately (the cat wall hanging is currently selling on eBay). I have been slack again this week but hope to list some things very soon.

The week that was (well the two weeks that were):

Master M is turning 5 this week. He wanted to go bowling for his birthday so we took his cousins along. I tell you, I am not cut out for childcare (my sister is an early childhood teacher but I didn't get that gene). It was a bit nuts but we all had a good time. The best bit was being able to leave the mess behind!

I love to bake but am not an arty person (didn't get that gene either). These cakes are as good as it gets but I think they are kinda cute.

I think Master M was happy enough with them.

Little Miss too, not that you can tell from the look on her face but what else is on her face (and all over her clothes) gives it away! It's funny, they say that what you eat when you are pregnant can determine what taste in food your children have. I am guessing that's why both of mine have a sweet tooth.

Just quickly, is anybody interested in a 'dining sweat and chairs' for $250? There is one selling in an op shop near my work. Hee hee.

More finds and a win.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. We had a quiet one and today I have post Christmas and NYE blues today knowing that it's all over for another year. The week between Christmas and New Years is my favourite of the whole year. Everyone in the holiday mood and relaxing. Master M kept asking when we would be going 'on holidays', we had to keep telling him that we ARE on holidays we are just not going anywhere. However I think we will have to book something next year as nothing beats being down the beach in this weather. It's a scorcher here today 39 degrees and similar for tomorrow. We ended up having a huge clean out of Master M's room this afternoon so a very exciting day all round - lol. At least the day wasn't wasted laying around (nothing else to do in this heat).

Below are some pics of  finds from the week before Christmas. I actually had an exciting find yesterday but as I haven't taken pics yet so you will have to wait for the next post.

OK so I paid too much for this but a lovely gentleman talked me into it. Didn't take much talking into though I must say. When I say too much, it wasn't THAT much but more than $10 (oh ok, it was $15).

 

I love the colour of this canister. The old lady wanted 10 cents!! I gave her 50c - big spender that I am. Hee hee.

Two of the three vintage Bushells jars (two large and one small. Shame they don't have their original lids. I bought them as I thought they would come in handy for something. They would make a great button jar!

 Have I shown you this before? I picked it up about six months ago. Not sure what I am going to use it for but it's pretty don't you think.

Thought I would show you this since it is so cute. Not vintage but reproduction, a little gift that Master M received from Santa. Push the lever on the side and the planes take off.  

Last but not least this is a giveaway win of mine from a couple of weeks ago. Thanks to Barn House Antiques! I wore it Christmas Eve and had quite a few comments. Gorgeous isn't it.

Hope you all are recovering well from your NYE celebrations. No recovery needed here apart from sleep as Little Miss decided that she stay awake from 12:15 to 2:15, who knew I had a party animal on my hands! Have a great night.

Cool stuff in Strath!

On Saturday Mr M thought that it was a good day to go for a drive to Strathalbyn. It is about 25 minutes from us and has LOTS of antique and collectible shops. Every August the town holds 'Strathalbyn Collectors, Hobbies and Antiques Fair'. This year Tim Wonnacott  from Bargain Hunt is making an appearance. I have been seeing his mug on the back of  public transport lately. You know the guy who matches his glasses to his bow tie, seems to really like pink and has teeth only a mother could love? Might even try and go this year as we have never been before. Anyway,  there is one shop in Strath that I LOVE, there is soooo much to look at. We had a squiz and I took some pics, then walked up High Street to check out some others shops. Mr M ended up waiting outside with the kids because Master M decided it was very boring and we didn't really trust him not to break anything. I didn't spend long in the shops because they were waiting for me but also because when you normally go to garage sales the prices in antiques shops seem way over the top. One place wanted $30 for a Pyrex mixing bowl that wasn't even in the best condition. I just get a bit frustrated with this as I am a bargain hunter.

Pics from the Wharf Markets, Pt Adelaide.

On Mothers Day we were having an afternoon tea at my SIL's house, so we left home a little early and visited the Port Markets on the way. Not much else to do on a Sunday.

I always ask the owners of stores if it is ok to photograph. Some of them look at me like I am crazy but others seem to understand - lol. Here are some pics for you.

As I have mentioned in the past, I have a thing for these old electric kettles. I really love the blue jug that is third in from the left. It has great curves and the colour is gorgeous. However being a bargain hunter there is no way I could bring myself to pay the $50 it has marked on it. Will have put it on my 'To Find' list.

Pretty Meakin set for four. Did I just say that? Hmm. I am getting old.

A retro budget box. Love this, check out the cute pics. Was marked $38 (too much for me). Wouldn't it be nice if we could pay our electricity bill in coins these days!

These look familiar, and again only four in this set. Maybe I was wrong when I thought I was missing one. I much prefer the blue and white (in other words - mine are sooo much better - lol).

The top part of this Edwardian high chair is adorable but the gears around the legs are a bit creepy and make it look like a piece of equipment that could be used in a torture chamber. It had an eerie feeling to it sitting there by itself. Sometimes antiques give off these kind of vibes don't you think? Times like this  I am glad that I live in this day and age where my best friend at meal times is a white IKEA Antiploe plastic fantastic high chair that I can hose down if need be.

 The gentleman at one stall wanted me to know all about this book. Printed in the 1930's it certainly not up to todays strict standards for our precious children's eyes. Perhaps we are overly cautious these days about what our children read or see on TV but now I can see how have become this way. Umm, Jack hung the Giants with a noose around the neck and illustrations included!! Night terrors anyone? Thank goodness they decided to only show the giants from behind!

Sigh. Can really see why some people love old type writers. So much character...

More canisters. Love the set with the green lids and I am pretty sure my Nana had some similar to the red and cream ones.

Miss Piggy would love this 'Kermit the Frog green' kettle.

Not usually such a fan of amber Depression glass but quite like it frosted. An elegant pair.

Had a great time but it was reaffirmed that children and vintage don't mix - even on Mother's Day!

Nally Ware

 

I love canisters but unfortunately I can't justify buying any more sets. I picked up these Nally Ware (1950's I think) blue and white set at a great second hand store in a local town. They were a great price but because I was so in love I didn't realise until I got home that there are supposed to be five of them. Note to self: try and keep head on straight when you see a bargain. Most likely I would have bought them anyway (that's what I tell myself). They are made of  Bakelite. I had been pronouncing Bakelite incorrectly for a couple of years (how embarrassing). I was saying bake - lite, instead of  bake - ka - lite. Luckily the lovely lady I bought these from corrected me.  I have performed the rub test on them (rubbed a spot on the canister until it warms up causing a strong odour) and it worked.
